The Funding of the British Film Industry

The UK Film Council


The UK Film Council was set up in 100 to develop and promote the British film industry. The Council received funding via various sources which included the National Lottery, distributing over £160 million of Lottery money over 900 films.


Notable titles include: 28 days Later, smash hit The Kings Speech featuring Colin Firth and Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa.


In 2010 it was announced that The UK Film Council would be abolished, resulting in high profile actors such as Emily Blunt and James McAvoy campaigning against the organisations closure. World renown Actor turned director Clint Eastwood also wrote a letter to George Osbourne warning that the closure of the Council would result in far fewer foreign production companies working within the British Film Industry.


Prescience
Prescience is an integrated media production company that focuses specifically on the creation of films and tv shows. Prescience provides various sources for the production of its UK Films such as debt financing, pre production development funding and equity.


Notable titles include: Wolf Hall, The Last Days on Mars and Sin City 2:A Dame to Kill For.


Film Four


Film Four is a TV channel owned by Channel 4 corporation meaning that the financial backing for their productions come from Channel 4 and their various sources of funding.


Notable Titles include: Attack the Block, Shaun of the Dead, Trainspotting and This is England.


BBC Films
BBC Films is an arm of the ever reaching BBC corporation, receiving the majority of its finances from its huge mother company. However the company also allows donations to contribute to film production. BBC Films produces around 8 films per annum with a host of successful releases.


Notable titles include: Mr Holmes, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and Saving Mr Banks
